I had got moved from West security wing in Leicester Prison to the top security wing in Brixton the same day that Manchester United won the European Cup in may 1968.

Reggie and Ronnie, who had been arrested about a fortnight before and Charlie and I were put in the special wing there. There was the ground floor punishment cells, next up was Ronnie, Reggie and Charlie Kray and then the Principal Officers office.

In june 1968, James Earl Ray was arrested at London airport, Heathrow. They were looking for him for the murder of Martin Luther King in Memphis. He was brought to Brixton prison to await deportation to America.

They treated it so seriously they moved the Principal officer out of the cell and treated him just like a condemned prisoner. In a condemned cell, always two cells knocked into one, you have a toilet, a bath, and a bed.

Two prison officers were with him twenty four hours a day. This is what they did to James Earl Ray, he was such a high profile prisoner If he commited suicide, the arguement between the American Government and the British would have been horrific.

There was a very big black population in Brixton and they were upset over a good man like Martin Luther King being murdered.

I had such a reputation then that I could walk about on the prison landings without anything being said. There was five of us on the top landing and Ronnie and Reggie were down below.

They used to get food parcels sent in, and I would go down and they would give me some to share amongst us. Sometimes James Earl Rays door would be open and I would speak to him.

He denied he had done it but he was quite proud of being nicked for it for some reason. But then he realised what he had let himself in for and was saying to me that the Mafia was behind it. I didn't take too much notice

It now seems it could be true because a Barrister who believes his innocence has took a statement from me and asked me to go to America to give evidence if needed.
